CAVs and motorway bottlenecks

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) can enhance our future roads by acting as smart traffic controllers. We've developed a method that uses CAVs to ease traffic congestion at bottlenecks on highways. When traffic gets heavy, CAVs step in to coordinate speeds, smoothing the flow and reducing jams. We tested this on a real highway in Antwerp, Belgium, and saw significant improvements in traffic flow and reduced delays, even with only a few CAVs on the road. This approach has the potential to make our roads work better and prevent traffic problems.
