SVT Traffic Engineering Research Group

The main objective of the Traffic Engineering Research Group is to carry out cutting-edge research in the area of Traffic Flow Theory and Operations. Our ultimate goal is to improve transportation systems and move them towards a sustainable state. To achieve this, researchers and students in this group work together conducting both empirical and theoretical studies. We apply scientific knowledge to develop state-of-the-art and pragmatic solutions. Research priorities for the group include:

• Develop models to better replicate real traffic conditions
• Improve understanding of traffic phenomena
• Contribute to a better definition of the role of cars in cities, while assessing their external costs and impacts
• Understand and quantify how different technologies and management strategies influence the performance of transportation systems
• Develop innovative solutions to improve traffic performance and reduce congestion both in highways and urban networks
• Identify new and efficient methods for using in-vehicle and infrastructure technologies to improve traffic conditions
• Optimize the operations of transportation systems from a multi-modal perspective

Members of the Traffic Engineering Research Group come from different backgrounds, including Engineering, Management, and Sciences. We believe this multi-disciplinary approach fosters innovative and out-of-the-box research methods and more importantly, drives ground-breaking research results.

We also believe in knowledge sharing and collaboration. Hence, the group has relationships with a number of public agencies, well known research institutions, and universities worldwide. We encourage our members to publish their research in both peer-reviewed scientific journals, and more popular trade magazines. We also encourage them to present it in both national and international forums.

The Traffic Engineering Research group conducts teaching activities in the areas of Traffic Flow Theory, Highway Design, Simulation, and Safety. We use both internal and external lecturers to guarantee the highest level of academic and practical expertise on each of the subjects. Currently, we offer the following courses for the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG):
